Bolton Women's Aid, Fortalice is a charitable organisation established in 1977 in response to the growing demand for emergency accommodation and support services for women and children fleeing the devastating effects of domestic violence.

  • In 1998, Bolton had the highest reported incidence of domestic violence in the whole of Greater Manchester(G.M Police statistics).

From its establishment in 1977 Bolton Women's Aid has grown and developed to become the major local provider of services within Bolton for women and children suffering domestic violence.

  • One in four women experience violence within their relationships.

We aim to provide support services to enable women and their children to escape the devastating effects of domestic violence and also to promote the self confidence for women to sustain independence from violent partners.

  • 30,000 women and children use refuges every year.

As members of Bolton Domestic Violence Forum, Bolton Women's Aid also makes a significant contribution to raising public awareness of domestic violence, and to the development of policies and procedures within local public services.

  • 50% 0f all female homicides are women killed by partners or ex-partners.

There are many myths and stereotypical views around domestic violence and through presentations and formal training courses we aim to dispel these views and raise awareness of the real issues of domestic abuse which is so destructive within families throughout society.

  • Women suffer violence for an average of seven years before trying to leave for good.

Children are supported through play sessions and on a one-to-one basis. We have recently introduced groupwork with children aged 8+ to promote assertiveness without aggression.

  • 100,000 women nationally seek help from Women's Aid each year.

Today, we manage two buildings, employ a team of 12 dedicated staff and currently require funds of more than £200,000 p.a. to operate our existing services. These services include :-

  • Safe temporary accommodation for up to twelve women and their children.
  • Support and practical help
